Music quiz answers #1

Joy, the beautiful spark of the gods,
Daughter of Elysium,
We enter, drunk with fire,
Heavenly, thy shrine.
Thy magic powers re-unite
What stringent custom divided;
All people will be brothers,
Where thy gentle wing abides.

Freude, schöner Götterfunken
Tochter aus Elysium,
Wir betreten feuertrunken,
Himmlische, dein Heiligtum.
Deine Zauber binden wieder
Was die Mode streng geteilt;
Alle Menschen werden Brüder,
Wo dein sanfter Fluegel weilt.

Full lyrics

Answer: Ludwig van Beethoven. Symphony #9 ("Choral"), 4th movement; a.k.a An die Freude or Ode to Joy. (Lyrics adapted by Beethoven from a 1785 poem by Friedrich Schiller.)

Where you've probably heard it: It's the primary musical theme of the original Die Hard movie, Wendy Carlos' adaptations of it make up half of the A Clockwork Orange soundtrack, it's the European Union's official anthem, it's currently being bastardized in a television ad for Manwich, and many other uses and adaptations.

The 4th movement is over 20 minutes long, so takes three YouTube videos to show.

Part 1 (with introduction and analysis by Leonard Bernstein; the above lyrics start at about 6:25)

Part 2 (the above lyrics come up again about 3:30)

Part 3 (if you listen closely, you can hear the first line repeated as part of the grand finale, starting about 5:20)
